Emmett Rahl Column - October 2001

On September 26th, we held our award/board meeting. Here are a few of the highlights:

Board Meeting: No new business.

Award Ceremony: All the awards listed last month were presented, along with Runner of the Year, which was voted on by a majority of AREC members.

Male Runner of the Year - This award was very close, tying on two different point systems, and first place votes, winning on 2nd place votes.

Todd Rose - Todd came back from knee surgery this year, and is nearly back to his old form. He hasn’t been racing as much, but watch out in the future!

Edward Villalobos - Ed has gone from occasional slow runner to award-winning racer, dependable race coordinator and our Most Improved Runner! You know how happy he is with a race by how much post-race Natural Light he drinks!

Emmett Rahl - Emmett was last year’s Runner of the Year, and has maintained his impossible pace of a race nearly every week, and bread/desserts for club members EVERY week. He is desperately trying to overcome his plantar fasciitis and run another regular distance P.R.

Todd Byers - Todd also has run nearly a race every week, plus he has been instrumental in providing GU to AREC, improving his shorter distance times, and securing hard-to-get entries for AREC members.

Winner: Todd Byers

Female Runner of the Year

Darcie Olk - Darcie has had an excellent year. She ran her first marathon at Long Beach in November ‘00, improved her half marathon time by 20 minutes, and is looking very fit and trim.

Tracey Johanson - Tracey has been more dedicated to her running this year. Her favorite “race” has been the Wednesday night runs, which she always runs faster than actual races! She plans on running her first marathon soon, and in December, is planning on giving Laura a run for her money!

Karin Schick - Karin came back on the scene this year after qualifying for Boston, getting over injury, and has scored some impressive 5K and 10K times, especially this past summer. Every time she shows up, she is staying with the front-runners to the turnaround (the front-running MEN!)

Laura Chaides - Winner the last two years. Laura has maintained her insane marathon pace, though her times have slowed a little bit. Laura is very dedicated to the running life, well-documented by the people who claim to have seen her running EVERYWHERE!

Winner: Laura Chaides

A few final notes:

Membership - If you still want to be a member for the last few months, remember that the fee is only $15, and you still get a T-shirt. If you have not received your T-shirt, please contact Emmett Rahl.

Newsletter - The newsletter does not write itself. If you actual read this part, I’m sure you are the ones who are talking while Todd makes the announcement asking for articles. Only Todd R., Todd B., Lance M., and Laura C. have written articles in the last year. An article doesn’t need to be a novel, just one or two paragraphs about your goals or something interesting in your life.

Website - I have recently reinstalled the section regarding upcoming races. If you could send me any comments about races you have completed (anytime), I will add that to the section. I may be contacting you in the next few weeks, or months asking you a few questions about races you have completed. I would appreciate any feedback you could give me.
