Emmett Rahl Column - October 2003 (Club Notes)

SAFETY – Although Daylight Saving Time doesn’t end until the end of October, it is starting to get dark earlier. Reflector vests or a small clip-on blinking light are available at local sporting good stores (like Sports Chalet). It’s a small investment (under $15) for safety. Even if you don’t have one of these items, it’s a good idea to wear light-colored clothing so that you don’t blend in too well with the darkness.

PASTA PARTY – Hard to believe that October is already upon us. This means that the Long Beach Marathon is less than 2 weeks away. Todd & Tracy Rose have agreed again to host the event, which will be on Friday, October 10th from 6:30pm – 10:30pm. AREC will be providing pasta, sauces, soft drinks and eating gear. Along with being our special event to carbo-load for the Marathon, the party is also AREC’s end-of-the-year award ceremony, including presentation of Male and Female Runner of the Year. Even if you aren’t running the marathon or receiving an award, there are lots of giveaways. Todd & Tracy live at 3436 Marna Avenue in Long Beach. (E-mail edrahl@yahoo.com for directions.) Please RSVP to Todd at (562) 598-6107!

ELECTIONS – AREC holds elections every two years (as per our Bylaws). The club welcomes any interest in running for positions, because it invites new points-of-view and helps guide the direction of the club. The time commitment isn’t huge (except maybe the newsletter) – a few board meetings and regular runs. Available positions are: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Race Coordinator. We are also looking at bringing back Members-at-Large to tackle Social Events and/or Fundraising.

Please talk to Emmett or one of the Todds if you are interested
