Emmett Rahl Column - January 2006 (AREC Notes)

Just a follow-up to Todd’s notes regarding safety and membership.

First, safety. On any run you complete on the streets, safety should be your utmost concern. It is gratifying to notice that our Wednesday night crew has been better about wearing light clothing, donning reflective items and not running in the middle of a busy street! Let’s keep up our club streak of no accidents (during regular training runs)!

And now membership. Since our remergence in 1999, AREC has always been about YOUR running experience. Having seen the tactics of other clubs to get people to join, to renew, we set out to create an atmosphere where people are not pressured to join, but join because they like and support the club. Naturally, I present a gentle reminder in the newsletter to renew your membership.

AREC Membership is for a calendar year (Jan. – Dec. 2006) and is $25 for an individual and $40 for multiple members with the same home address (i.e. family). Benefits include a technical team t-shirt, monthly newsletter, club events, membership in Road Runners Club of America (which includes insurance) and more. The more members, the more we can work with to have the activities or benefits YOU want.

If you have been a member in the past, no need to fill out a new form. I have pre-printed forms to glance over and sign (or I can e-mail a PDF form to you, if you don’t find me at your particular run).

Finally (wait, just one more fun item), I want to thank everyone who wrote for the newsletter this past year. The RRCA Western Region named me the Online E-Newsletter Editor of the Year. But without the great writers and fun group, this honor would not have been possible. As always, submit anything you want to the newsletter AND results. Thanks again.
