Emmett Rahl Column - October 1999

Last month, we announced the winners of the Grand Prix, plus Most Improved and Most Valuable Runners. The club, as a whole (basically, whoever was there that day), voted on "Runner of the Year." Surprise, surprise, it was Laura Chaides! Each of the winners received a certificate and my famous sundried tomato, garlic and onion foccacia. I hope that all of you who didn't win anything are jealous enough to make a "run" at them this year, because we are starting from scratch.

More Club Ideas

The past few months, we've been talking about becoming more of a club. I've been looking into registering with RRCA (Road Runners Club of America). The benefits are more widespread recognition, a quarterly newsletter, and extra insurance during our runs. Linda & Karine have also been looking into silk-screening some low-cost team shirts or Coolmax jerseys. There are a lot of possibilities (putting on a small race for charity, participating in some team competitions, etc.). If we did join up with RRCA, there would be some small cost, like $5-10/year, but I would like any input to what you might like from the club in return. At the very least, I think it might be fun to plan to do a few races together or have a Christmas party.
