Emmett Rahl Column - October 2000

AREC is a Good Thing

Everyone must be just as excited as last month to read my column, because I only received one article this month, so either I must be a very great motivational writer, or you're all trying to give up the sleeping pills and using my articles instead.

October was another exciting racing month. You may notice in the results that a lot of them are bolded, denoting new PRs (Personal Records). This is not an ordinary happenstance. Look back through several newsletters and you will see that Todd B., Todd R., Laura, Tim and I rarely set new PRs. This is because we have reached a certain plateau in our running careers, and it may take something amazing to move to that next level. All of the rest of you, however, just all happen to be peaking at the same time... or running races of odd distances, like 2.57 miles.

ONe run of special note is the recent half marathon done by Edward Villalobos and Darcie Olk. Both Darcie and Ed only began running with us since the beginning of the year, but already this was their second half-marathon. In January, they ran the Pacific Shoreline Half and turned in a decent time of just over 2-1/2 hours. On October 15th, both of them turned in a time of 2:12 at Orange County Half, an improvement of 19 minutes! I think SOMEBODY's making a move for Most Improved Runner for next year!

Special recognition also goes out to Neva Higgins, who picked up a couple of 2nd place finishes, and Dick Ames, whose "The Relay" team took third in their division.
