Racing Season Begins!

I know what you're thinking... it's February - racing season has ALREADY begun! Technically, yes. There have been a few races in January, but the option of multiple races every week doesn't really kick in utnil this month.

The best thing about having a lot of racing options is that you can run in small, medium or large races. Personally, large races turn me off, which is why I've waited until next month to run my first Los Angeles Marathon, and why I will never run Bay to Breakers again, unless I'm seeded! The medium race is always a good race for the seasoned runner. You're all but assured that it's well-organized, because most runs don't become medium-sized overnight. They started out small and learned from their planning mistakes over the years. There's no guarantee that you'll win any prizes, but it will be a comfortable experience. The BEST kind of race is the small race. Just ask Karine Brooks the kind of confidence booster it can be (in the upcoming Ulis Williams 10K, she holds the all-time 50-54 course record!!). Small doesn't necessarily mean disorganized; it may mean "best kept secret." In any case, if you run a race with only 100 total people, you will probably at least finish in the top 10 in your age group, and that feels good, especially if you've run in a big race and placed higher in your age group than people in the small race!

So, as they say in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, "Choose wisely."
