Emmett Rahl Column - February 2005 (Club Notes)

Membership. Just a reminder (but no pressure…). It’s 2005 (February already!). AREC welcomes all runners to its runs regardless if they are members or not. But… for just $25 per year, or $40 per household, gets you a year’s membership. Benefits include a technical team t-shirt, a few social events, as well as insurance and membership in a national running organization. If you are renewing your membership, NO NEED TO FILL OUT A NEW FORM! (See me or Todd Rose at a run, you can doublecheck the information and sign it.) OR, you can e-mail me and I’ll send you a PDF-version (which you can sign and mail back with a check, or bring to a workout).

Safety. Days are getting longer, but still remember to wear light-colored / reflective / blinking light clothing at the Wednesday night run. Yield right-of-way to all vehicles, just to be on the safe side. Also, remember to show up on time, because then you’ll start with the group, and there is more safety in numbers.

Afghans and Tees. There is still one AREC afghan available ($30). Also, last year’s design shirt (white dri-release with blue lettering) is available for $10, or REALLY OLD cotton tanks and shirts (assorted varieties) for $5. Sizes are limited.

Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon. Some folks have been asking about JSRM, which comes up sooner than you’d believe. The cost is still $40/person (so at least no 166% cost increase like last year), and I believe Todd Byers is coordinating. There should be a sign-up sheet at the runs all this month.

Board Meeting. Our first board meeting of 2005 will be on Wednesday, February 23rd, immediately following the run. If you have any interest in the direction of the club, I would encourage you to attend. Topics under discussion will include the possibility of a bi-monthly club 5K as well as the upcoming Long Beach Marathon training. This latter subject is of importance, as we hope to have many more volunteers than last year assisting with the long runs (from actually running to helping with water or setting out a table). Our goal is for the meeting to start at 7:30pm PROMPTLY, and go fairly quickly, so you can get back to your post-run socializing!
