Emmett Rahl Column - March 2004 (Club Notes)

Not a lot to report this month. February’s a short month anyway. We had a little bit of rain, but we ran anyway. We’re like the mail – no sleet, nor snow, nor rain, will prevent us from running!

Shirts are here! If you’ve paid your membership, shirts are in (except for Small, which are on back-order, and should be in soon). Additional shirts are available for $12 for members ($15 for non-members).

If you haven’t joined AREC, and you enjoy running with us, we encourage you to join. The $25/year membership fee pays for insurance, advertising, shirts, social events, and more! See any of the board members for an application (or Emmett for a pre-printed renewal form). talk to any of the board members).

Although it’s getting dark later, Daylight Saving Time is still a month away, so please come prepared with a reflective vest or a flashing light to wear. (If you have an extra, bring it for someone who might forget!) SAFETY is still the number one club priority. Make sure you are aware of people, bicycles and cars at all times.

There has been a recent surge in attendance at both the Wednesday and Sunday runs. Let’s keep this up. A larger group allows more people to run the same pace together (and Limerick’s loves the extra business!).

In just two weeks, the Nike Club Run LA series will be starting up again at The Yardhouse. Note the new day: TUESDAY. If you attend (whether as a runner or a volunteer), talk to people about AREC. New member Sonia Tramel was just one of the people that we met at this great event!

On February 18th, AREC had a board meeting to discuss club issues. Once LA Marathon is finished, we are going to start base training for the Long Beach Marathon. Dennis Murphy and Liz Caporelli have said they will help, but to make this work most effectively, anyone who might be training for the LB Marathon should consider helping out as well. The best part about it is that you will be training anyway, and you’ll definitely find some people to run with!

Finally, sign-ups have begun for Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon on Sunday, April 18. The cost is $40/person. We would like to have the money and the teams all set by mid-March, so that we get in before the deadline. (The $40 is tax-deductible.)

Shocking Turn of Events!

OK, so this isn’t particularly shocking, but no one submitted any articles for the March newsletter. I would like to continue my series on various AREC regulars, but some people I have asked have declined. Maybe if I ask Pretty Please???

The best bonding experience of a running club is learning that there are others who have done some of the same races, suffered the same pains or got that true runner’s high!

Write a few paragraphs about your first trail race or the thrill you felt when you completed your first 10K or marathon. These don’t have to be long articles; they don’t have to be grammatically correct (that’s why I’m the editor).

Anyway, I’m sure you were looking forward to the next big article by Jasper, Todd, Todd, Dennis or myself, but March is “Official Regular Newsletter Writers Writer’s Block month,” which may even mean a drought for April, too! Write a little something today!
