Emmett Rahl Column - April 2006 (Club Notes)

Website. Check-out our (almost brand-)new website at www.arec-lb.com. I am taking suggestions for anything you want to see up there, including old newsletters, links, upcoming club races, etc

Membership. Just another reminder/follow-up on membership. Despite listing this in the newsletter, some people still don’t know that membership runs for the calendar year (January – December). With over 100 members, it is too much additional work to have to remind people to renew on their anniversaries (which would be almost every day of the year!). RENEW NOW!

Benefits of Membership. Include a team t-shirt, a monthly e-mailed newsletter (starting this month, only e-mailed and available to members), club social events, insurance and membership in Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). For $25/year, it’s great!

Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon. We’re finalizing probably 6-7 teams for JSRM. If you haven’t paid the $40 fee, bring it ASAP to Todd Rose. (Write the check to “JSRM.”) Even if you decided not to sign up, consider joining us anyway. It’s a fun afternoon and sometimes people drop out or get injured, so you might be called upon to fill in. Details about the BBQ will be available at upcoming runs.

Shack to Shack 2. The sequel (which should be better than the original) sets off on May 13th (or May 12, depending on how you define midnight). We are running reverse direction – San Diego to Long Beach, so when we finish, we’re home. The original two teams are participating, and we’re working on a third. There is no cost to run, except whatever your team works out (gas, support food/drink, going out to dinner afterwards). Talk to Emmett, Kim Garman or Inger Nelson after a run if you are interested.

Heather Stevens Update. Heather recently returned from a trip to Switzerland with not-so-good news: The experimental treatment did not seem to work, her platelet count is low (platelets help your blood clot), and her bone marrow has stopped functioning. The result is that Heather needs to have frequent transfusions and may be in the hospital a lot more. What she needs most now is your spiritual support: Think Positive Thoughts. Perhaps there is no substantitive belief that Positive Thinking works, if you believe it and Heather DOES believe it, it WILL work. And at the very least, provides Heather with a dose of mental improvements, even if her body does not exactly follow suit. We hope to see her on Wednesday nights at least for the camaraderie, if not to walk/run. If you see her, give her a gentle hug and warm wishes. Otherwise, keep her in your thoughts.
