Well, we're almost moving into summer, and it looks like racing season is moving into high gear. After last month, we had a record 36 ARECers scoring points in the Grand Prix - a far cry from the 12 we had two years ago! There are lots more races coming up, so if you have any interest, mention it before the Wednesday run, and I'll bet there are people willing to carpool.
Last Wednesday, we held our first Board Meeting of the new year at Coachs in Seal Beach. Mostly, we talked about how much fun the Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon was (and even began planning for next year). Another issue was promotion of the club. If you know of people who would like to get into running, bring them! And we also have business cards and flyers with our schedule and contact numbers. Finally, we introduced our second new Vice President, Todd Byers. Todd has a lot of experience running marathons (both administratively and actually running them), so he will be a great resource for us. Welcome aboard!
One resource Todd has are connections with a lot of race organizers and stalwarts of the running community. Next month, John Bingham ("The Penguin") will be in town on a non-AREC day (Thursday, June 7). He subscribes to a belief similar to my own that anyone can run. He has written books and is an excellent speaker. He's willing to do just about anything, including speaking to us. If you have any great ideas, talk to Todd Byers.
I'll also just throw in another reminder about dues. Again, there is no requirement to pay dues, but it does help defray our costs (like newsletters) and insures you during all AREC events. Dues are $25/year.
Finally, I'll have team shirts and tank tops available every Wednesday. If you paid new membership this year, you're entitled to a shirt. If you paid last year's, but haven't received a shirt, come see me. If you would like to buy an additional shirt, it's $10 (cash or check payable to AREC). I am also looking into another possibility, such as a hat. If this sounds of interest to you, please let me know.
