Last month I wrote that this month was the one year anniversary of the newsletter. Despite being one month off (12th issue, 13th issue...), nearly no one shared with me their favorite moment of AREC. Hmm. Do 25-30 people show up every Wednesday out of habit? C’mon! Where do you think these articles come from? Well, apparently, the same 4-6 members have to write all the articles and occasionally, I get a four letter word outta Jamie Brooks. “Why do you like running?” “Beer!”
The second team bout with apathy concerns team uniforms. Clearly, aside from Laura, Karine and me, no one wants team uniforms. Of course, if I’m wrong, go around to Sportmart, Sport Chalet, Runner’s High, etc., and pick a cut/style you like.
As for the Tuesday night hill runs, there wasn’t much turnout, but those of us who came out, are really getting the hills down. If you run Signal Hill a couple of times, the 2nd Street Bridge feels like nothin’! As promised before, I will be there and will run with anyone who wants to run hills.
Finally, I have been working up some membership budgets (for the past year). There’s an organization called RRCA (Road Runners Club of America) that provides liability insurance and other services to runners with membership. You get insurance (against running injuries), the RRCA quarterly newsletter, paper and ink for our monthly newsletter, and advertising for the club. If we want to put on our own races in the future, the runners and volunteers are covered under the insurance. (RRCA also administers some grants for low key women’s races.) Finally, the money would go to subsidize some team events (JImmy Stewart, the aforementioned team uniform, and the end-of-the-year awards). The cost of 6 months membership will be $10 (July 1-Dec. 31), and starting in January, it will be $20 for the whole year. A little caveat emptor: there is no requirement to join. Anyone is welcome to come and run every week, because above all, we’re here to run because we love it! Becoming a member protects you and supports the club.
I’ve made a copy of the membership form and the by-laws available. If you decide to join, please fill out the form, pay me by cash or check, and indicate on the bottom your choice of people for Board of Directors.
Finally, congratulations to all successful runners this month, including Todd Byers and his back-to-back marathons, Todd Rose and Laura Chaides on their AREC Naples Fun Run sweep, and Marlaigne on her half marathon P.R., despite the grueling hills of Palos Verdes.
10. Um...I’m not in school anymore. I’m not writing no paper.
9. Oops, I forgot. You didn’t remind me.
8. Guinness dulled my brain.
7. I’m sorry. But I took a solemn oath that all great athletes are mentally stupid and I just can’t break that.
6. I can run...or I can write. Don’t make me choose writing!
5. Too busy drinking beer.
4. I already wrote one (ed note.: And I’ve written 20!).
3. Emmett will write them if I don’t, so why bother (see above)
2. My significant other (in this group? Puh-lease!) won’t let me.
1. I don’t like to write, but I’ll run so many races, you won’t NEED articles!!
The editorial board of the AREC Newsletter has declared Emmett Rahl a genius! Note: This was an issue where no one submitted anything!
