Emmett Rahl Column - July 2002 (Club Update)

Not much club news to report. We are still in the process of ordering new team T-shirts. Please weigh in on what you would prefer, otherwise, we will just go with more of what we had before. If enough people have interest in something new, or some other piece of merchandise, we will definitely look into it. If you are reading this and say, “Well, someone else will say something,” trust me, no one has. That is why there are very few articles in the newsletter this month. They are ALL by me!

There was a very strong showing of AREC members at the Wild Rivers Challenge and 5K. Our most distant team member, Jason Reneau, who hails from Camarillo, managed to take 5th place in the 5K. Also, thanks to some prodding by Kristina Boede’s friend, Jill, Edward Villalobos also took a medal with 4th place in the Challenge. The winner of the women’s race (and $500) was one-time AREC runner and water polo Olympic Silver medalist Julie Swail.

The event was a lot of fun and the great part about racing with a number of people is that you don’t have to drive alone, and you can do something together afterwards – like go out to breakfast, or hang out and waterslide. If you are interested in getting together a group for a race or hooking up with a group for a race, talk to Edward Villalobos, AREC’s Race Coordinator. He usually knows what is going on during a particular weekend and is more than willing to offer or coordinate rides.
