The Return of AREC (Part II) (E. Rahl)

Last month, in this space, was a breakdown of all that we had accomplished at our first (after a hiatus) meeting of AREC. If you went on any Wednesday runs in July, you should have received a copy of the newsletter, a copy of the by-laws, a membership form and a ballot for Board of Directors. So far, 14 people have signed up. If you haven’t signed up yet (and there is no pressure to do so), and you are especially interested in a team T-shirt or singlet, please turn in your form and money as soon as possible, as we would like to get going on getting those made.

One further decision that we had postponed at the meeting was which group to sign up with (RRCA or USATF). I called USATF, and they told me that our practices have to be on a track or they won’t insure us (plus their cost is $75/yr/club PLUS $15/yr/person). RRCA, of course, is Road Runners Club of America, and since we run on the road, this makes more sense. Besides insuring us during our club runs, they will insure any races we put on, and all AREC members will receive FOOTNOTES, a quad-yearly publication.

As for the Board, we accepted ballots from all runners in the month of July, and the new Board is as follows (if you “won,” I know this is the first you’ll read of it, but if you have any questions, talk to Todd or myself):

President Todd Rose

Vice President Marlaigne Hudnall

Secretary Emmett Rahl

Treasurer Brandy Phillips

Membership Karine Brooks

Race Coord. Ed & Erik Villalobos

Social Diane Belanger

Fundraising Todd Byers & Laura Chaides

There are two sections of the Board (if you read the by-laws) - the Primary Board and the Secondary Board. The Primary Board are the group that are required at all the meetings (plus 5 more people for a quorum), and the Secondary Board takes care of day-to-day functions. If you need any membership information, see Karine (or myself). If you want to know what races are coming up, or negotiate a ride, contact the Villalobos’. And so on.

Finally, we will need to have another meeting in the next couple months to discuss any upcoming plans, officially approve our new by-laws, our meager budget, and any other new business. We hope to hold it on a Wednesday (out of convenience), and would love if someone would host (though I suppose we could hold it at Limerick’s). Hope to see you all there!
