Club Issues. Throughout the year, AREC has board meetings. Even though you see the 5 names on every newsletter, what makes AREC a great running club is the input of its members. Some input is very subtle – for example, we have kept our membership cost consistently low by finding sponsors or just shopping around. Some issues to discuss include: next year’s membership cost (and if we want to scale the cost based on time of year joined), if we want to expand our horizons or any other club issues (especially because the club keeps getting bigger!). The meeting will be Wednesday, August 25th after the run, location to be announced (probably at Limerick’s, though that may be too noisy).
Marathon training continues. Each Saturday, at 7:00am, at Stoneybrook Villas Clubhouse (500 Bellflower Blvd., near Pacific Coast Highway), our runs continue. The current distance is about 16 miles and is very easy going. We are still looking for volunteers to help out. Volunteering simply involves showing up and running at whatever pace you want (after all, it’s training for everyone), and if you know the area, all the better!
Special Marathon Training Event. Next Saturday, August 14th, the marathon training group will be meeting at the Distance Derby 10 mile/5 mile race in Huntington Beach. The distance on the official training schedule is 8 miles; however, running in a 10-mile race is a great opportunity to practice running with crowds and controlling your pace. I would recommend running the 10-miler (it is only 2 miles more than the 8 miler planned) and you will have to strategize better than you would on a distance that is one-and-a-half times as long as a 10K! The 10-miler starts at 7am, and the 5-miler at 8:30am (Note: I will be doing both.) You can register online at http://www.active.com.
