Emmett Rahl Column - August 1999

Issue number 2! A few corrections: Bernard informed me that the group has been around for nearer to 18 years (not 16), but not much else has changed. We still have a loyal Wednesday group (6:30pm, Limericks, 2nd & Ravenna)) of runners at 7-12 minute/mile pace and walkers going slightly slower. There is currently no cost to be a member. If you have any friends who might be interested in joining AREC, Todd has some nice business cards that give all the details (or you can make a copy of the newsletter).

As promised last month, I looked into developing the club into something more. I'm still waiting to hear about team jerseys from a few companies, but the basic response I got was not very economical. I found items much cheaper in catalogs (like Roadrunner Sports or Eastbay). I have also been in contact with RRCA (Road Runners club of America) about joining their organization (which provides insurance, race assistance, and a quarterly newsletter).

I'm afraid there isn't much racing news or results this month. Either no one really raced much or the races were super small. One item of note is the leaps and bounds that Laura Chaides has been making. She's completed two 5K races at sub-8:00 pace, which is really impressive. She is looking to shatter her 4:48 LA Marathon time come November. Keep up the good work, Laura! Laura and I are trying to come up with some speed workouts to do come fall for endurance training for the Long Beach Marathon. Additionally, we are looking to run portions of the LB Marathon course in 15-20 mile blocks to get to know the course better.
