Fighting Illiteracy: One Book at a Time - Kristy B. Browns - May 2008

I am a Literacy Coach for the Los Angeles Unified School District and a member of the International Rotary Club. The Rotary Club is one of the finest organizations I have had the privilege of being selected as member of, as it helps people worldwide. I am currently coordinating book donations for Reading by 9 and the International Rotary Convention. These books will be given to young children all over the state of California.

This is a very important project as illiteracy causes many problems for our nation. Children that don’t learn how to read most often turn to a life of crime. This is a very important cause to me, as I strongly believe that everyone deserves the right to read, and children can’t learn to read without books. As a reading specialist with a certificate from UCLA, I have worked in multiple schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District and have found that many children do not have any books in their home. Children’s can’t learn how to read without books. I have also trained teachers in literacy instruction all over California and recognize that our California elementary school classrooms are in desperate need of books (especially with the current state budget cuts in education).

If you can help by donating new or gently used children’s books to the International Rotary Club please contact me at kristybrowns@aol.com. I need to have all the books collected by the end of May.

Your company or business can also donate tax-deductible funds to the Rotary Club in order to purchase these books, if you are too busy to bring books. Thank you for taking the time to read this and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I love running, and it is wonderful to run with such great people!
