Meeting Dean and Bart - Leigh Anne Sandlin column - October 2008

If you saw the movie or read the book “Ultramarathon Man” then you know who Dean Karnazes is.  Nadine Echeverry and I got a chance to meet Dean in San Francisco last month.  On the Friday evening before the San Francisco Marathon, August 1st, there was a wine tasting fund raiser to support the San Francisco Youth Running Program.  Dean Karnazes the Ultramarathon man himself and Bart Yasso, The Mayor of Running, from Runner’s World Magazine were the guest speakers. The gathering at the fund raiser was a small intimate affair and after listening to Dean and Bart entertain us with their remarkable adventures in running, we had a chance to chat with both amazing men. Dean Karnazes may very well be the most fit man on earth!  As an internationally recognized endurance athlete, he has done what few people thought humanly possible.  He has run 350 continues miles, where temperatures reached 128 degrees, and he’s run a marathon to the South Pole in negative 40 degrees!  He has a new book that was released in August,  50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days- and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance!   While talking to Dean he clued us in on his next adventure….(it’s still a secret so promise not to tell!) He will be running from San Francisco to New York!  Bart Yasso is something of a celebrity himself.  He just released a book, My Life on the Run.  He has run races around the world, on all seven continents, and completed more than 1,000 races!  Both men were great guys, ama zing athletes, down to earth, funny, and meeting them was truly the highlight of my trip to the San Francisco Marathon!  The wine wasn't bad either!
