Tam Premsrirath Column - August 2006 (Bernard Dean Mills Celebrates 25 Years with AREC)

Bernard Dean Mills celebrated his 25th Anniversary with A Running Experience Club last Wednesday. He joined the club in 1981 on the last Wednesday in July. Its been a glorious 25 years when I first started running here,Esays Bernard. Dr. Bob Brown was in charge of the club and he turned Wednesday nights over to me. And then in late 1998, I asked Todd Rose to take it over and hes done a tremendous job and the club has grown and prospered with the help of several talented people. I think that the future is really bright.E

There are two major ways that the club has changed in the last 25 years:

  1. People run much slower times now than they used to. People run a lot less miles than they used to 25 years ago. It was common for A Running Experience Club members to run 90-120 miles a week. And subsequently, they ran faster race times. Faster miles then, more miles then.
  2. A big difference between now and then, although AREC had then and has had all along, women in the club, there are more women running now than there were 25 years ago.Elt;/ol>
