As I have mentioned in a club e-mail recently, I am the Vice-President of a new non-profit organization called the Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation (LBNF) – club member Gavin Mc Kiernan is the President. Our goal is to raise money to benefit at-risk youth in the Long Beach area, and our first step in that pursuit is to put on a 5K/10K race given the name Wrigley River Run and 1K Tadpole Trot on Saturday June 7, 2008 that will travel through the Wrigley Village area of Long Beach and along the L.A. River bike path.
A.R.E.C. runners get an automatic $5 off the entry fee. The 5K run/walk begins at 7:30am and the 10K run/walk at 8:00am, so you can pick one race or possibly do them both at another significant discount. Also the male and female winners of each race will receive a $100 gift certificate for shoes courtesy of Runner’s High and Road Runner Sports. And with this being an inaugural event and likely smaller in size, you just may have a chance at taking home a new pair of shoes!
To bring exposure for the club and provide a place to hang out prior to and after the races, A.R.E.C. will have an Easy-Up somewhere near the start/finish line. Tam Premsrirath is in charge of it and plans to have our table and banner set up along with business cards, easels baring pictures of club members, and mannequins displaying our shirts. If you would like to help out organizing this booth and/or “manning” it during the events, please let Tam know asap at tam_premsrirath@yahoo.com so she can plan accordingly.
And as an added bonus, you get an extra 5 points in the A.R.E.C. Grand Prix standings by running either race (10 for both) or volunteering at the booth, and an additional 5 points for wearing any one of our club shirts.
I will continue to have entry forms at club runs or you can sign up online through Active.com by going first to www.wrigleyriverrun.com and clicking on registration. I hope you will help to support this event for such a great cause in our local community!
