A Running Experience with Dick Ames (March 2007)

Profession…automotive engineer.

I started running in…1966, 1984 and 1986. In 1966, I was on track teams in high school and college. In 1984, it was divorce recovery. And in 1986, I started running with the Long Beach House Harriers, graduating into racing, marathons and then into retirement from racing, until the last two months.

Life/sport philosophy…Just do it!

Favorite spot to be active…off-road on a trail.

Athletic highlights…My PR for a mile was in combat boots, 4:34 in ’72. My second Boston Marathon, was the Boston 100th. I’ve done 11 marathons: St. George, Las Vegas (3 months later where I qualified for Boston), Boston in ’92, three Catalina Marathons, St. George in 1995 where qualified for Boston, Sacramento two months later and did my PR, Boston 100th, Las Vegas in 2000 and blew up and retired from racing.

My running experience with AREC is that…it’s the best social, serious running club I’ve ever belonged to. I’ve been hashing for 21 years and that’s the best social non-serious running club I belong to.

I’ve been with AREC since…somewhere around 1996.

The best thing about AREC is…the social enthusiasm of the members.

I run because…of the adventure, the sense of being fit and strong and I like other people who run.

When I’m not running I…drink or sleep.

My pre-race meal is…probably a Balance bar and a Hansens energy drink.

After a race I treat myself to…a beer.

My most memorable race is…the Boston 100th.

My favorite race to do year after year…the Wild Wild West 10 Mile in Lone Pine, CA.

My goal is…to be faster than people expect an old fart to be!

My running mantra…”Beer near.”

I’m inspired by…hauling ass down hill. I’m also inspired by having more good days than bad days.

My best training tip…take days off after hard workouts. Don’t try and run more than four days a week. When I qualified for Boston, my high mileage week was 45.

The best advice I ever got was…divorce your wife. And when your knees hurt, it’s time for new shoes.

I want to improve in…speed and strength. And my sex life.

I love…adrenaline and adventure and the trill of running in strange places.

I hate…rude people.

I run marathons…to test myself, to give myself a goal and achieve it and the satisfaction of being an elite runner at my age. I thought about this when I qualified for Boston 100th, when you think about how many people wanted to run the Boston 100th and how many people actually qualified. That was pretty cool.

I wish…to have something to smile about everyday.

My most embarrassing moment running was….getting the case of the runs running my first marathon, St. George, and having to rip the sleeve off my shirt to take care of business.

To all…keep bringing your friends to this place and keep the running alive.
