A Running Experience with Johan Deprez - September 2009 (edited by Tam Premsrirath)

My profession… international tax attorney (previously university economics professor.)

As a child, I wanted to be… a race car driver.

I started running in… my teens as part of soccer training.

My favorite word is… “arguably.”

My life/sport philosophy… is to find new and interesting challenges, experiences, food, and drink.

My favorite spot to be active… is in bed (Nancy told me to say that J.)

Athletic highlights… finishing the Long Beach marathon (my one and only marathon) in 4:19 when my target was 4:30.

My running experience with AREC has been… excellent. I enjoy the Wednesday runs, the Saturday marathon training and trail runs, the people and the camaraderie.

I’ve been with AREC since… about 2005.

The best thing about AREC is… all the different people that I get to run and swap stories with.

I run because… I can (given soccer knee injuries, just being able to run a long distance is great) and it is always a challenge.

When I’m not running I… work, watch hockey, enjoy wine, beer, and great meals with Nancy.

My favorite running surface is… asphalt road.

My pre-race meal is… usually pasta, often with a bison meat sauce (because it is lean and tasty.)

After a race I treat myself to… anything I can!! Maybe, breakfast and a couple of beers at O’Malley’s in Seal Beach.

My favorite race is… Long Beach marathon (& half marathon) because it runs right outside my front and back door.

I run races because… I love the challenge, the improvement, and (sometimes) setting a PR.

My goal is… doing a marathon PR – again.

My running mantra… is borrowed from Greg LeMond (cyclist) – “it doesn’t get any easier, you just go faster.”

I’m inspired by… all the AREC members for energy, drive, example, and support. Specific people over the years include Bernard, Win, Steve, Mark and Paul (for showing me what old guys like me can aspire to); Rick (for demonstrating the joy of a first marathon); Nancy, Noel, Rich, Bob and Vall (for getting through that first marathon); Rich/Colleen, Kate/Deb, Dave/Cindy, Zach/Inger (for that “couples” support); Emmett, Tam, Dave, Nadine, and many others (for making AREC work); Todd (for the enthusiasm and dedication); and Nancy (for everything).

My best training tip… run with people faster than you, and try to keep up with them.

The best advice I ever got was… don’t let anyone convince you that you are too old to do something!!

I want to improve in… running and life.

If I could run with anyone famous, it would be…Catherine Zeta-Jones (so I can get a “phone make-over” at the same time.)

I love… chasing women (during a race J.)

I hate… leg cramps

I wish… I could run faster.

If I could take only one more journey, I would go to… see the genie that grants me 100 more journeys.

The one person living or dead who I’d most love to have a beer with is… Nancy.

My best experience was… my one and only Long Beach marathon (2008).

To all… thanks for being AREC.
