A Running Experience with... John Hunter (edited by Tam Premsrirath) - June 2008

My profession … HVAC Service (Heating Ventilating Air Conditioning)

I started running in…September 1972. I ran high school track and cross-country.

My favorite spot to be active is…any place outdoors.

Athletic highlights…nothing to brag about. I just enjoy running and racing.

My running experience with AREC has been…positive. You folks really love running.

I’ve been with AREC since…2005.

The best thing about AREC is…the friendly people.

I run because…it is the fairest sport. You work hard you will improve. You are never told you are too old or slow to race. Nobody “sits on the bench.” We all can compete.

When I’m not running I…camp and ride the old dirt bike in the desert.

My favorite running surface is…anything that isn’t a treadmill.

My pre-race meal is…pasta or rice and beans.

After a race I treat myself to…dark beer and if possible, hot tub.

My favorite race is…a tie, Carlsbad 5000 and Long Beach Half.

My goal is…to have less injuries and stay active as I get older.

I’m inspired by…my parents and my old coach and friend, Joe Carlson. I still see him. He still runs. Way back when this club started, he used to run with this group. He started the AREC store that is now Runner’s High.

My best training tip…pace yourself in the beer gardens.

The best advice I ever got was…same as above.

I want to improve in…my social life. I have always been a bit too quiet.

I love…kind-hearted people, motorcycles, tall athletic women.

I hate…selfish people, warm beer.

I run marathons because…I haven’t in years. I really like the half.

My best experience was…becoming an uncle four times.

To all…enjoy life and thanks for letting me sound off!
