A Running Experience With... - June 2006 (edited by Tam Premsrirath)

Kate Rupley

Profession…I'm a System's Engineering Manager with Boeing.

I started running… in high school, freshman track, then basically quit running for 25 years except for an occasional half-hearted mile until Rich Satow told me about AREC and persuaded me to come out on a Wednesday night.

Life/sport philosophy… Don't take yourself so seriously.

Favorite spot to be active… is down by the water. The temperature is good and the view extraordinary.

Athletic highlights… In 3rd grade, I was the standing broad jump champion for both boys and girls.  I think the fact that I'm running is highlight enough.

My running experience with AREC… has been grand. Rich Satow and Colleen Shea took me under their wings and got me going.  The AREC Saturday training runs and running partner Twila Bing helped me complete my first half marathon.  And Win Freeman has egged me and supported me into completing 6 half marathons and one 14 mile trail run already this year.  AREC is great, the people are very supportive and fun to be around.

I’ve been with AREC since… March 2005.

The best thing about AREC is… the camaraderie and friendships I've made.

I run because… it helps me manage the stress in my life and I enjoy the people.

When I’m not running I… work, read, do Stained Glass, and photography.

My pre-race meal is… 2 eggs and a piece of toast.

After a race I treat myself to… lunch with Win, Colleen, and Rich.

My favorite race… so far, strangely enough, has been the PV Half Marathon.

My goal is… someday to run a half in under 2 hours.

My running mantra is… relax, run smooth, flow.

I’m inspired by… my fellow AREC runners.

My best training tip is… on downhills, hit mid foot, keep your knees bent, elbows back, and let gravity take you down the hill.

The best advice I ever got was… how to run from a Chi running class.

I want to improve in… speed.

I love… a cold Coke after a race.

I hate… slow drivers in the carpool or fast lane.

I run half marathons because… it is a challenging distance but doesn't require massive amounts of time to train or recover.  (ie. I can run two a month without injury)

I wish… I was a faster runner.

To all… thanks for being such a great group of runners and friends.
