Profession… Physicist – I provide oversight for all the radiation uses at the VA Hospital, Long Beach.
I started running in… 1964; I was on the track team in Jr. High, High School, and College, though I was a high jumper and never really ran more than 11 steps. As we age, the first thing to go is the power, the last thing is stamina, so now I’m stuck with distance running.
Life/sport philosophy… We live on average about 78 years, then we are dead for such a long time; it just isn’t fair. So get the most out of the time we have.
Favorite spot to be active… The bike trail from El Dorado Park to Seal Beach; High Sierras.
Athletic highlights… Haven’t really had one yet.
My running experience with AREC has been… Interesting, rewarding. Before I joined the club, it was sooooo easy to skip running for a day or five; now I have friends to pester me.
I’ve been with AREC since… June 2005.
The best thing about AREC is… the people. Just enough new people to keep things amusing, and more than enough long-term members for stability.
I run because… I’m old and can’t do much else anymore.
When I’m not running I… work, work, and work, love my job.
My favorite running surface is… steep, winding trails with lots of trees and some creeks to jump over; fences are good.
My pre-race meal is… Clif bars, banana.
After a race I treat myself to… a hot shower, complaining, big lunch…
My favorite race is… over.
My goal is… to be still running when I’m 80. Or to some day just be 80.
My running mantra… Don’t go out too fast (I never listen to me, either.).
I’m inspired by… Heather, Win, Chuck, Brian, Todd(s), Stacy, Colleen, Rich, Laura, Steve, Roberta, Kristin (see attached sheets)…
My best training tip… When you hit 50, cut back to 4 days a week. One long run, one tempo run, two recovery (easy) runs and you won’t get injured as often. Of course, you will never get in shape, either.
The best advice I ever got was… Duck!!!
I want to improve in… I dunno, I’m not fast enough for 5K, and don’t have enough endurance for the marathon. I could go either way.
I love… anything from a bakery, life, my wife, sailing…
I hate… actually, I don’t hate anything.
I wish… I could.
My best experience was… the Palos Verdes Half Marathon, very challenging.
To all… Thank you, for being there…
