A Running Experience with Tom Armfield - July 2007

Profession… Engineer for Boeing.

I started running in…1994. My life/sport philosophy is…keep it simple, have fun, and don’t be afraid to add more cowbell whenever you can.

My favorite spot to be active is…the Santa Monica Mountains, El Moro.

Athletic highlights…completing four marathons, the Mud Run at Camp Pendleton, climbing Mt Whitney three times (once solo), a few short triathlons, and perhaps an ultra or Iron Man in the near future???

My running experience with AREC has been…all good. Terrific people and good times. Good times.

I’ve been with AREC since…September 2006.

The best thing about AREC is…the members and the club officers. No attitude or pressure, just support to do or be what you wish – run for fun or serious training. AREC is what you make it and that can’t be said for all running clubs. Todd, Emmett, Tam, and Win have a lot to do with that. And the Wednesday run is at Limerick’s, what more can I say?

I run because…I like being active and it helps me stay in shape. It’s something you can do just about anywhere, and it’s a great way to see new places and meet new people. I also like to eat--a lot.

When I’m not running I…cry. Kidding, I go to the gym, read, hike, write, swim, watch movies, concerts, the usual stuff.

My favorite running surface is…trails.

My pre-race meal is…pasta.

After a race I treat myself to…whatever sounds good to eat, plus wine and/or beer, followed by mass quantities of dessert.

My favorite race is…all of them, especially the ones where I’m not on a first name basis with the medics.

My goal is…to keep running for as long as I can and maybe one day I’ll catch up to…someone.

My running mantra…”Don’t fall down… don’t fall down….”

I’m inspired by…those who have overcome great odds to achieve their goals. My family, especially my parents, has been a tremendous inspiration.

My best training tip…determine what your goal is and plan your training based on that. Don’t allow anyone or anything to get in your way and don’t lose your focus.

The best advice I ever got was…no matter what the job, always do your best. Lead by example.

I want to improve in…everything.

I love…family, friends, dessert, traveling, most sports, not being injured.

I hate…rude and negative people.

I run marathons because…of the challenge and the satisfaction.

My next marathon is….Marine Corps.

I wish…smooth trails for everyone.

My best experiences were…to name a few, graduating from Arizona Sate University, working for Boeing, becoming an uncle four times, completing my first marathon, and joining AREC.

To all…Thanks for making me feel so welcome. Happy running!
