Artesia 5K (by Mel Guzman) - February 2009

On Jan 10th, I participated in the Artesia 5K. It was a first of sorts as it was both the 1st 5K Artesia held and my 1st race as an AREC runner. Normally I stay away from rookie races, as we all know that nothing ever goes right the 1st time a race is held.

However, other than starting a little late, this race went off without a hitch. It was a strictly a race around the neighborhood and I've been told by the city that they've decided to hold it very year as it's also a fundraiser for the Artesia-Cerritos Cancer society.

The real treat for me came after the race when the awards ceremony was held in the auditorium. I had a cold and had my head down on the table and my arms crossed as I wanted to go home. However I had plenty of energy when I was called to receive my 3rd place medal on stage and met Miss Artesia.

This was not the 1st time I received an award, but it WAS the 1st time I actually stayed to receive it instead of going home and receiving something in the mail.

My 1st time as an AREC runner and I got a medal out of it. Wow! Just wait until next year when I run it again, hopefully without a cold! Mel Guzman receiving his medal... and a bonus!
