July 2000 Race Report (E. Villalobos)

Dale Shimizu (6/10) - Dawn East, Marlaigne Hudnall & I ran a poorly attended, but well organized run put on by LB Public Health Dept, headed by runner Ron Arias. The main sponsor was the department’s alcohol and recovery program, so out of respect, no one broke out the traditional post-race alcohol. After running through the streets of Signal Hill, we found that we all had finished top 10 in our age groups, and I was number ONE! Next year, we should all go!

Mud Run (6/17) - A late spring marine layer lifted at exactly 9:00am at Camp Pendleton’s Lake O’Neil, where a mixed team of AREC’ers converged for the semi-annual slosh. I captained LBH3 (Steve Green, Laura Chaides, Darcie Olk and Craig Holmes (IMCA finisher/Hasher)). We also saw Dawn East (in boots), and Jamie Brooks (on the winning male boots team) and Brandy Phillips. If you want to see how truly muddy it was, see Dawn’s pictures of us facing obstacles like fences, mud pits, and the finale of crawling through the mud with wires above our heads. We are came in holding hands (the rule for teams) and went on to beer drinking. We all look forward to the next Mud Run on October 21, 2000.

Gardena 5000 (6/25) - It was a very warm Sunday when thousands showed up for the annual 5000 meter race. Neva Higgins, Dawn East and I boldly represented AREC. Neva took third in her age group, and let’s just say that Dawn and I had fun, especially in the post-race beer garden, where free Asahi beer was being drunk in great quantities.
