Race Spotlight - Bare Buns Fun Run

Runnin' bare, through the bushes (T. Byers)

Because much interest has recently been shown in road trippin’ for this year’s Bare Buns Fun Run events held in Washington State, I am revisiting this item detailing the unique ins-and-outs associated with these fine runs. I will be happy to answer any questions about these events and to help with travel arrangements. So, for your review --

There are only two races which should be on everyone's racing calendar in the month of July - the Bare Buns Fun Run West, held at Fraternity Snoqualmie in Seattle, WA, and the original Bare Buns Fun Run at the Kaniksu Ranch Nudist Park about 50 miles north of Spokane, WA. The BBFR WEst is on July 15, 2001, and the Kaniksu event follows on July 29, 2001. I will give the straight skinny on each of these events.

The premise is the same for each of these runs - they are "clothing optional," meaning that people do not have to participate nude (though the souvenir t-shirt for Kaniksu does make that distinction). Use of photography is limited to staff and press, making these low-key, fun events for those just wanting to hang out for the weekend. On-site camping is offered by each community at minimal cost so that one may be close to the starts and get in the swing of things before race day.

Both courses are out and back 5Ks over unpaved trails and roads. The Western WA offering is uphill outbound, while Kaniksu saves the uphill for the return when it can be more appreciated. Participants may use all of the ranches' facilities, such as pools and hot tubs. Of course, nude volleyball is always in the offing!!

For the Hashers among us, during the Kaniksu race, there is the world's largest nude hash - the Cracked Moon Hash. Thankfully, there are usually not that many brambles or poisonous plants along even the Eagle route!!

I will avail myself for individualized personal training sessions which address fashion particulars specific to this unique class of event. Together we will outline and participate in a rigorous training regime, starting with full Gore-Tex running suits, including gloves and hat and will gradually work our way to the garments which give these events their unique flavors and monikers. I am also available for specialized one-on-one tanning sessions at some of SoCal's most picturesque and secluded locales in order to avoid that painfully and potentially embarassing post-race burn. This is the only event that I do not mind training for, so let's get on it! I do, however, reserve the right to approve the class composition!! For the men, I will mentor the duct taping clinic for those who feel it a necessity, as I do.

Feel free to contact me with questions about these races. More information may also be obtained for the Western WA run at (425) 392-NUDE (www.calweb.com/~mooncrow/wafs.htm) and for Kaniksu at (509) 937-BUNS (www.ontherun.com/barebuns). Each of these sites offers online registration. While I am not currently signed up for either, I would be willin to go if there is a commitment (such as purchasing your airfare). As always, having an experienced person along will make the trip go more smoothly, and I am happy to help make this experience a reality!

Feel free to contact me with questions about these races or the Boat Cruise. More information regarding the runs may also be obtained for the Western Washington event at 425-392-NUDE (http://www.parkforestia.org/BBFR.html) and for the Kaniksu outing by phoning 509-937-BUNS (http://www.ontherun.com/barebuns). Each of these sites offers on-line registration for the respective runs as well.  Hope to “see” you there in July…
