Spotlight - The Harrisdirect Seattle Marathon (Todd E. Byers)

For many years I have been a Volunteer for the Seattle Marathon events, a benefit for the Candlelighters, an advocacy group for children with cancer. When I lived in Seattle I was the Vice President of the all-Volunteer Board in addition to holding various other Coordinator positions. I am still currently one of the Registration Coordinators and I also coordinate the Bus Course Tours before the event.

The Harrisdirect Seattle Marathon events will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2005, and encompass a Childrens Marathon where the kids complete a marathon one mile at a time over the previous month and finish their distance on the actual marathon course, and a half marathon in addition to the marathon distance. There are also walking and running divisions (with separate starts!) to allow walkers more time to comfortably complete their events with full on-course benefits. Everyone is treated well throughout the race.

I realize that I have been somewhat biased over the years believing that the Seattle Marathon was one of the better marathon-related events out there. Not only do I believe in children and in the beneficiary for them, but over 2000 volunteers work together to make the events happen in fine manner.

But why take my word for it? Stacy Shourt and I completed the marathon together there last year. So feel free to ask her opinion of the quality of the event. Several other ARECers have also competed in the late November distances who you can ask about it too. This is an open invitation to those who would like to do the Seattle Marathon this year. I will be able to provide you with an entry brochure any time up until the event. Also, if at least ten people want to represent us in November, I will be able to get a discount on all of our entries as long as I can send them in together.

Remember, this year’s event is on Sunday, 27November2005. So please consider heading North for the Thanksgiving holiday and doing one of the Seattle Marathon events and making AREC even more proud. You will not be disappointed!!
